This is my second year participating in the Multicultural Children's Book Day 2018 (1/27/18) and I join numerous reviewers in highlighting books which celebrate diversity. The copy of this picture book, sent me from Sister Girl Publishing, for purposes of this review, will be donated to a classroom in Seattle, WA - through Reading Partners Seattle.

Synopsis:
Even at an early age children quickly learn that life brings challenges. In Sister Girl and the Training Wheels, she learns about patience, support, and growing up. Her father is instrumental in not only helping her ride a bike, but also preparing her to understand how to handle other hurdles in life. Readers are left with a sense of pride in family, and also themselves. Sister Girl is easy to relate to and the message of not giving up can be received by anyone, at any age.
Opening Lines:
Sitting on the porch, smelling the sweet aroma of the beautiful rose bushes and listening to the buzzing bees flying around her head, Sister Girl watched the neighborhood children pedal down the street on their colorful bicycles, chattering, smiling, and laughing.
Sister Girl then thought of a wonderful idea.
"I am going to learn how to ride a bike like a big kid all around town," she said out loud.
What I like about this book:
Many things require time, practice, and patience to master. Sister Girl learns that bike riding is one of those things. While emphasizing safety, her father teaches her that persistence and patience can lead to mastery of a skill. Sister Girl also discovers that sometimes you need a helping hand, directly or through training wheels.
A strong, message driven text is supplemented by bright illustrations of a wide-eyed young girl and her loving father, as they traverse the perils and joys of riding a bike throughout their diverse community. Written and illustrated by an own voices author, the Sister Girl collection seeks to empower all girls "to be courageous and strong."
